Awesome book carving artist recycling old books into eco-friendly art

If you are like us here at the Green Celebrity Network, before the advent of eco-friendly e-books if we had a few extra dollars to spend, we’d buy books. Whatever money we had left was used for things like organic food and rent. Now, however, our bookcase stacks are overflowing with literature we have already read — but we are emotionally attached to books and not ready to turn them in for paper recycling or to be made into compost yet. That’s why one artist’s idea about how to recycle old books comes across to us as incredibly appealing. She is turning old books into art by — get this — carving them.

1-800-recycling.com shared the following review of book carving. They say:

“Book carver Julia Strand creates beautiful artworks out of unwanted books, giving them the chance to be appreciated for a newfound artistic value, if not so much for their infromational content. This is book rescue that’s definitely to our taste at 1-800-RECYCLING!”

Carved BooksIn a special feature article that showcases the carved books in photos, green news readers get to peek at the clever artisan’s design.

“A carved book could easily be featured as a showcase piece staging an old or new home” says licensed Florida Realtor Donna Stewart, an avid collector of old literature. “If you have a book that is not a rare copy but you like the looks of it, finding a sculptor to carve it could make a great conversation piece addition for any room of the home.”

Whether you are into interior design for the aesthetics of it or are trying to showcase a special art piece that is eco-friendly in your green home, a carved book could provide the right “library” feel without all the old-fashioned paper appeal.

Regarding the creation of her up-cycled recycled artwork, Strand says, “Strand says, “I use X-Acto knives, rotary cutters, tweezers, rulers, custom-cut panes of glass and lots of glue…” proving that old-fashioned cottage industry handi-craft projects are still cool to do.

Check out the amazing book carving images on the recycling website. “All of Strand’s creations are for sale through her Etsy shop, with prices ranging from between $225 and $300, depending on the type of work. But hurry, they’re selling like proverbial hotcakes!…” says the green news group.
