Venus Williams and sister Serena Williams go vegetarian to cure disease?

Celebrity athletes Venus Williams and her sister Serena Williams are not just famous athletes. Making a 2012 New Years Resolution to eat a raw food diet that is primarily vegan, they are actually new role models for star celebs who are considering the health and fitness benefits of going vegan. Star celebs like Mike Tyson, Bill Clinton, and Russell Brand are all vegan. Now vegetarians can proudly add the names of these two fit celebrity women!

Venus Williams and Serena WilliamsSports celebrity Venus Williams will be making a green New Year’s Resolution for 2012. The former number one women’s singles tennis star in the world is going completely vegan, the Daily Mail reports. Younger sister Serena Williams will be joining her on the diet for her own health and to provide moral support.

Venus Williams is embarking on the new vegan diet to improve her overall health after being diagnosed with a relatively rare autoimmune disease. She is a great health and fitness advocate to have represent the movement, as she was always fairly healthy before a crippling joint condition hit her these past few years. Even though their decision to go green was not based on animal rights ethics, they are helping put the spotlight on a health food diet that can powerfully affect people’s health in such a way that’s totally positive.

Since being diagnosed with Sjogren’s Syndrome this year, the tennis star celeb decided to switch to a raw vegan diet and engage in other green, holistic lifestyle changes like yoga. The disease can cause a variety of conditions, including inflammation, and Williams believes the green vegan diet will help reduce instances of inflammation of the joints.

Venus Williams had dropped out of the U.S. Open earlier this year after experiencing intolerable joint pain, to the point she could barely hold her racket. Finally, after years of investigating progressively worsening pain, doctors discovered the cause. And there is no cure. However, a green diet will help, and sister Serena, in a move of solidarity, is joining Venus in a quest for better health.

According to the Ecorazzi website:

Now the tennis star is taking it easy. “I’ve been going hard the past few weeks and it scares me, I need to avoid stress or I’ll get sicker and go backwards,” Venus said. It was Serena who suggested that she try holistic ways to treat her symptoms, as some treatments for the disease can cause other health problems.

The green celebrity already is known for her support of those suffering from auto-immune and other complex diseases. She supports the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Great Ormond Street Hospital. Will she see how the green diet treats her and start a new foundation for those with Sjogren’s Syndrome? We hope, in a few months from now, she can spread the word about how her health has improved as a result of her green lifestyle and encourage other green celebrities and their fans to spread the word as well.

Both girls are putting the spotlight on sexy vegetarians who eat right to live healthy and responsibly. “Other famous faces and sexy star celebs like Natalie Portman, Alicia Silverstone, Olivia Wilde, Pamela Anderson, and Chelsea Clinton are also vegetarians, and the news the Williams sisters have joined the list of Hollywood women who don’t eat meat is helping draw more attention to the growing health food movement…” says Gather Celebs.

Eat your veggies, men and women.

If not for your health then do it for animal rights as part of a sociopolitical statement about how preventing cruelty to animals bred as food supply can actually be good for sustaining humans.
