Golden Globes winner George Clooney beat Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio

Wondering who won the big acting competition in 2012? Apparently George Clooney was more in favor with the Foreign Press Association. They awarded him the Golden Globes award for best actor and his film The Descendents won best movie. That left actor Brad Pitt and actor Leonardo DiCaprio looking forlorn in the live studio audience following news of their loss. Fortunately for them, host Ricky Gervais did not lay into them to embarrass them.

George Clooney Actor George Clooney got big accolades for his role as Matt King in The Descendents. His producer / director team said that he was the quarterback for the film, one they believe will go down as one of the most memorable in history. While many folks who have not bothered to go see the movie about a man trying to hold his family and life together after his wife slips into a coma may disagree, one thing was clear: when it comes to winning awards, Clooney still mops the floor with everybody.

Why?

Because unlike Brad Pitt or Leonardo DiCaprio, he is better at one thing: real-life social networking.

The actor has so many friends behind the scenes in Hollywood, it is hard to imagine anyone could have beaten him. While Cloon spends time inviting Hollywood insiders to his private estate on the shores of Lake Como, Italy, Brad and Angelina have been traveling the world to help the United Nations.

As Clooney plays armchair quarterback networking on his charity benefit projects that help the people of Haiti, Leonardo DiCaprio has been traveling to meet political leaders around the world to help save tigers — he has set up his own tiger protection charity.

But, as always, the actor was both gracious and funny accepting his award. Playing his predictable public self, he teased Brad Pitt, played no jokes on Ryan Gosseling, and was left alone (essentially) by show host Ricky Gervais [surprisingly enough].

Always taking the moral high road and paying a compliment while sneaking in a joke about another actor who did a full frontal nudity scene [that left him — for lack of a better word — impressed], he managed to make a gay comment that still left his machismo in tact. [He joked the guy did not need to use his hands to swing and hit the ball while playing golf.]

One thing that was also obvious watching the Golden Globes was that George Clooney is a stand alone bachelor kind of star.

While George Clooney’s last girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis got a lot of press with him in the past, his new girlfriend Stacy Keibler was in hardly any of the TV audience shots.

Whether or not that means his romance with the female professional wrestler is on the wane is unclear.

All we know (for now) is that the famous humanitarian who just took home the Critics Choice Award also took home the Golden Globe… and Brad Pitt’s Moneyball film did not seem to come near.

George Clooney helped establish the Not On Our Watch charity with other movie stars like Matt Damon (who was not present) and Brad Pitt (who sat with girlfriend Angelina Jolie and smiled big at Clooney from the audience).
