Hollywood celebrity Johnny Depp pirate fame and fortune — hot or not?

[Jun. 11]

Who is actor Johnny Depp? Actor Johnny Depp turned 48 years old on June 9. Believe it or not, the Generation X icon was born in 1963. His latest block buster success, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is a 2011 Walt Disney Pictures adventure fantasy film and the fourth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series. Depp signed on to return as the charming, conniving and roguish Captain Jack Sparrow back in September 2008, saying that he would come back if the script was good. Almost a year later, Disney announced that Depp would be paid $55.5 million to return as Captain Jack Sparrow, realizing that without him the franchise would be dead and buried. The movie Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides co-stars fellow Hollywood elite, actors and actresses like Rolling Stones Keith Richards, Penelope Cruz, Robbie Kay, Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane, Bronson Webb, Yuki Matsuzaki, Kevin McNally, Anton Lesser, Jerry Bruckheimer, Deobia Oparei, Stephen Graham, Richard Griffiths, Rob Marshall, Emerson Tuitt Malcolm, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, Dariusz Wolski, Derek Mears, Gemma Ward, Sam Claflin, and Kevin Senn. For that reason (due to outstanding casting), Depp signed on and has in fact given his celebrity endorsement to the blockbuster hit for both script and cinematography [being fun to participate in filming and to see in 3D on the big screen].

WHO IS JOHNNY DEPP? ACTOR, CELEBRITY DAD, GREEN CELEBRITY

During his lifetime, actor Johnny Depp has been nominated for top awards many times; most notably winning the Best Actor Awards from the Golden Globes for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and from the Screen Actors Guild for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. He also has achieved a sex symbol status in American cinema, being twice named as the Sexiest Man Alive by People magazine in 2003 and 2009. Depp has also been nominated for Academy Awards in 2004 for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, in 2005. But what means more to Johnny Depp — fame or fortune?

When asked how he feels about these awards, Johnny Depp relied, “Sure, I find it touching, honestly, but awards are not as important to me as when I meet a ten-year-old kid who says, ‘I love Captain Jack Sparrow’ . . . that’s real magic for me.” So the fame that goes with the fortune is what makes Johnny Depp a movie making machine.

Born John Christopher Depp II in Owensboro, Kentucky, on June 9, 1963, Johnny Depp is a Green Celebrity. An advocate for Sophie’s Gift, a growing database of celebrity messages aimed at helping coma patients and raising funds for crucial hospital equipment, this Pirates of the Caribbean movie series star made a voice message for a 17-year-old British girl who had been in a coma for five months when parents of the girl sent him the request because he was the favorite actor of their daughter and they hoped playing it to her everyday would help wake her up. Then, in March 2007, when his own daughter contracted an E. Coli infection that caused kidney failure Depp showed his gratitude for the care she received at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, which treats children who are suffering from the rarest, most complex and often life-threatening conditions, by donating $2 million to the facility.

Johnny Depp, named one of the 50 Most Beautiful People by People Magazine in 2001, is best known these days for roles in which he portrays freakishly eccentric outcasts misunderstood by society and usually have flamboyant appearances and mannerisms. Always adapting and recreating his appearance to suit his roles, Depp’s hairstyles are ever-changing with looks ranging from short to long hair, messy to cornrows, he’s even worn layered hairstyles, side fringe haircuts, short layered hair with changes of color to boot but most recently he’s been on-screen sporting the roguish seaworthy dreads of drunken pirate Captain Jack Sparrow. Depp based the character of Captain Jack Sparrow on rock legend Keith Richards and wanted some of his teeth to be gold-capped for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) and though he thought the producers would never agree he found a dentist and had them capped anyway. The 48-year-old father of two has been quoted as saying, “I don’t pretend to be captain weird. I just do what I do”.

The youngest of four children, Depp has one brother and two sisters. His family moved frequently during Depp’s childhood, and he and his siblings lived in more than 20 different locations, settling in Miramar, Florida in 1970. With the gift of a $25 guitar from his mother when he was 12, Depp began teaching himself to play by listening to records while locked away in his room. He eventually started up a few garage bands. In 1978 his parents divorced and a year later, Depp dropped out of high school to become a rock musician and though he attempted to go back to school two weeks later, the principal told him to follow his dream of being a musician.

When he later married Lori Anne Allison (Lori A. Depp) in 1983 he took up the job of being a ballpoint-pen salesman to support himself and his wife. Depp made his transition into acting during a trip to Los Angeles, California with his former wife who introduced him to actor Nicolas Cage. It was Cage who advised him to turn to acting, which culminated in Depp’s film debut in the low-budget horror film, A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), where he played a teenager who falls prey to dream-stalking demon Freddy Krueger. Three years later, Depp achieved fame as police cop Tom Hanson in the series “21 Jump Street” (1987) (1987-90), and in 1990, he was firmly established as a leading Hollywood actor with the Tim Burton movie Edward Scissorhands (1990), where he played a sad-faced, tragic hero who had scissors for hands.

Depp has dated several female celebrities, and has been engaged to Sherilyn Fenn, Jennifer Grey, Winona Ryder and Kate Moss. He divorced Lori Anne Allison in 1985 and is currently living with his long-time girlfriend French singer-actress Vanessa Paradis, with whom he has two children: Lily-Rose Melody, born in 1999 and Jack, born in 2002.
