Green Racing: Charitable Indy 500 champion dies in fiery crash

In the days before his death, Indy car racer Dan Wheldon participated in a fund raiser that netted over $40,000 for charity. Now, his sports memorabilia is being auctioned off to help raise money for his own family. INDYCAR, the governing body of the auto racing series where the young driver competed, has been working with GreenFuel Technologies to improve the energy consumption of the cars, to make them more environmentally friendly. Cool Cars: Bamboo cars design inspired by green surf boards?

Greg Abbot, an electrical vehicles tinkerer, saw some surfboards made from woven bamboo composites, according to Good Design. He noted that one of the popular features of the bamboo boards was the fact that they are both lightweight and durable, and he decided that such a composite just might serve as a lightweight body for an electric car, which would require something like a 200 pound battery pack added to its standard frame in order to travel 100 miles.
